Hours: flexible, vary throughout the seasons; 35 hours on average.
Description: The St. Louis River Alliance is seeking a dedicated National Water Trail Coordinator for the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail (SLRE NWT). The Water Trail Coordinator will assist in the management of the National Water Trail program, plan on-the water-events, promoting, and networking. The ideal candidate will adhere to environmental justice principles in every aspect of the work, have leadership experience, a passion for environmental stewardship and building outdoor recreation access, marketing and/or event coordination, and exceptional organizational and project management skills. Funded through the City of Duluth by Legislative‐Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).

Responsibilities of SLRE National Water Trail Coordinator:
Work with Executive Director to hire and oversee two seasonal part time National Water Trail Neighborhood Leaders/Liaisons who will be responsible for creating strong relationships within St. Louis River communities
Work is primarily focused on under-served neighborhoods with the intention of addressing obstacles to work towards environmental justice
Increase visibility and awareness of the National Water Trail through local and regional outreach opportunities, including but not limited to attending community tabling events, speaking in schools, and presenting at conferences/trainings
Build visibility, awareness, and access of the SLRE National Water Trail by planning, promoting, and implementing up to four educational and recreational community engagement events per year.
Manage National Water Trail grant objectives, ensuring that planning, and reporting is done on time and on a professional level
Facilitate the National Water Trail Advisory Council by scheduling meetings, building agendas, and providing clear and consistent communications on National Water Trail developments, goals, and needs
Implement the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail 5-Year Action Plan and Master Plan
Utilize the National Water Trail Communication Plan for promotion using all marketing avenues including social media, email marketing, press releases, website updates, outreach materials and building/seeking media relationships
Coordinate and manage SLRE National Water Trail map updates and edits, work with map designer, acquire sponsorships, coordinate printing and map distribution
Build resources for on the water including safety information guides, gear/rental guides, promoting access points, etc.
Qualifications: Applicants with the following qualifications will be given preference, but all are encouraged to apply:
Must possess strong project management, organizational and marketing skills
Experience in the multi-faceted obstacles to the achievement of environmental justice, and willingness to acquire knowledge as necessary to address those needs
Ability to have relevant social sensitivity across cultures and socio-economic class
Ability to work to help overcome internal and external obstacles to advancing environmental justice
Experience or ability to learn and perform on-the-water safety and recreation techniques (training provided)
Ability to efficiently use email, online calendars, spreadsheets, and social media
Strong communication skills including excellent written and verbal communications
Must be self-directed to lead projects, programs, and oversee two neighborhood leaders
Experience in public speaking and ability to attend outreach events
Driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle (mileage is paid)

About the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail
At the headwaters of Lake Superior lies the Nation’s largest freshwater estuary, the St. Louis River Estuary. Flowing between Minnesota and Wisconsin, the estuary has a rich history. Unfortunately, due to unregulated industrial dumping, the St. Louis River was one of the most polluted waterways in the United States. After decades of work, the River is slowly returning to health. The St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail project is a direct result of a cleaner river.
The St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail is a multi-use waterway enabling the public to experience the St. Louis River Estuary amidst the urban landscape of the Twin Ports. The Water Trail includes 11 loop routes for paddlers and boaters of all skill levels and abilities to build their own memories and relationships to the St. Louis River.
The St. Louis River Alliance is the proud manager of the SLRE National Water Trail, and continues to lead a working group of representatives from Minnesota and Wisconsin to implement the necessary steps to carry out the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail Master Plan.
In March of 2017, the City of Duluth and many Minnesota and Wisconsin partners completed and approved this plan. The Master Plan was then submitted to the National Parks Service and in October 2020, the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail was officially designated by the United States Secretary of the Interior.
