The St. Louis River Alliance is a membership organization committed to supporting the resiliency of the St. Louis River. As river stewards we are the voice of the river, working together to protect, restore and enhance the St. Louis River.
We envision a clean and healthy St. Louis River with a thriving ecology, economy and community.
Our Goals
Goal 1: Connect People to the St. Louis River
Build connections between community members and the St. Louis River through education, outreach, and events, that lead to actions and behaviors that contribute to a sustainable, healthy, resilient environment.
Goal 2: Habitat Projects
Improve the health of the ecosystem through the implementation of on-the-ground projects and actions that protect, restore and enhance wildlife habitat, ultimately benefiting human populations.
Goal 3: Be a Community Leader
Initiate collaborations and prioritize actions that keep the health of the St. Louis River in the forefront of the community.
Goal 4: Fundraising
Grow organizational sustainability by diversifying revenue sources to support the mission driven work of the organization.
Goal 5: People/Human Resources
Involve highly qualified board, staff members and members who support the mission of St. Louis River Alliance and will work to strengthen the organization.
Our Story
The St. Louis River Alliance’s initial roots were planted as a Citizen Advisory Committee, formed to assist Minnesota and Wisconsin state agencies develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the St. Louis River Area of Concern.
In the 1980’s, the lower 39 miles of the St. Louis River was designated as an Area of Concern (AOC) on the Great Lakes. It is one of 43 on the Great Lakes in both the US and Canada. The first RAP identified nine environmental problems and developed 43 recommendations. The current RAP has 80 management actions that are in various stages of implementation.
Created in 1996, as a nonprofit, the St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee’s (SLRCAC) primary focus and efforts was to foster communication between public and tribal agencies, industry groups and community stakeholders in the implementation of the RAP. The CAC also advocated and sponsored stewardship efforts as well as promoting sound management of the resources provided by the St. Louis River, Lake Superior and their watersheds.
In 2009, the SLRCAC began doing business as the St Louis River Alliance. Alliance members include individuals, families, businesses, organizations, local and tribal governments – all helping support our work to improve the St. Louis River.
