Beginner Birding and Bird Identification: a River Connection Field Event
Join the St. Louis River Alliance on Tuesday, September 26th from 5:00 to 6:30 pm for ‘Beginner Birding and Bird Identification: a River Connection Field Event’ hosted at Kingsbury Bay. We will park and meet at the Waabizheshikana Trailhead Parking near the Munger Inn at 7009 Pulaski St, Duluth. Please carpool if you are able. No prior birding experience is necessary for participation. Binoculars will be available for use during the event.
During this event, attendees will be introduced to the basics of birding during fall migration along the St. Louis River. Experts from the Duluth Audubon Society will lead the discussion on techniques to locate, identify, and observe birds, as well as guide attendees in the use of bird-spotting equipment such as binoculars and spotting scopes.
Participants are free to come and go at their convenience over the duration of the event. We will explore the Waabizheshikana Trail as it winds past Kingsbury Bay. This event is open to participants 6 years of age or older; and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Melissa Sjolund with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will share information on completed Area of Concern Projects that have helped to clean-up and restore this portion of the St. Louis River.

This event is made possible through the Great Lake Restoration Initiative and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. It is intended to reconnect those who have been historically cut off from the river due to a variety of circumstances. Therefore, priority is given to those living in one of the 18 communities adjacent to the St Louis River including: Carlton/Thomson, Cloquet/Scanlon, Cody, Denfeld, Fairmont, Fond du Lac Reservation, Fond du Lac Neighborhood, Gary-New Duluth, Irving, Lincoln Park, Morgan Park, Norton Park, Oneota, Riverside, Smithville, and Spirit Valley.
**If you do not reside in one of these neighborhoods, you can still register but will be added to the waitlist and notified by September 22nd if space is available.**
In case the Beginner Birding event needs to be canceled due to inclement weather, we have a rain date scheduled for Thursday September 28th at the same location from 5:00-6:30 pm.

The Waabizheshikana Trail parking area is paved and has accessible cut outs that lead to both the Munger Trail (a paved and level biking and walking path) and the trail along the river which is a gravel path with some mild changes in elevation. Accommodations can be made for individuals that require an entirely paved surface for event access.
One wheelchair accessible portable restroom will be available.
